DXF pattern pieces: units, layers and pre-cutting check
How to check a DXF from VLOTHO CAD: millimeters, 1:1 scale, CUT, BASE, STITCH and HOLES layers, and contour verification before sending for cutting.
DXF from the main VLOTHO CAD designer contains geometry in millimeters. Before sending the file for cutting, check it in the receiving software: the units, contours and layer assignments must match your workflow.
1. Set millimeters and check the size
The export specifies millimeters in the DXF header. When importing, select millimeters and a 1:1 scale. Measure a known piece and compare it with the project. If the size differs by a factor of 25.4, check the conversion between inches and millimeters.
Compare identical lines: the base size and outer cut edge may differ because of the seam allowance. Explanation of dimensions along the cut edge and baseline.
2. Assign operations to layers

| BASE | Construction baselines; do not assign cutting to them automatically. |
| STITCH | Stitching lines, if included in the model. |
| HOLES | Hand-stitch holes when the corresponding mode is enabled. |
| MARKS | Alignment and fold marks. |
| LABELS | Piece labels and dimensions for checking. |
An empty layer is possible: for example, hand-stitch holes are not created for machine stitching. The layer color is not a ready-made command for the equipment. Check the assignment of each operation in your software.
3. Check contours after import
- Make sure all required pieces are visible and have the correct size.
- Check that cutting contours are closed, verify cutouts, and ensure there is no repeated cutting along overlapping lines.
- Check the number and placement of holes, if used.
- Exclude labels and auxiliary lines from cutting operations.
- Check a test sample with the equipment operator before cutting the main material.
The file does not contain universal tool, speed, or cutting compensation settings. These are determined for the specific material and equipment. After manually editing the contours, recheck the joins: the original parametric model does not automatically rebuild from the external DXF.
